AOC leads composites into the "green" revolution with EcoTek™

EcoTek line debuts with a listing of unsaturated polyesters and vinyl esters

AOC introduces new EcoTek™ Green Technologies for leading composites and cast polymers into the "green" revolution that is occurring in the global marketplace. EcoTek technologies help customers become better environmental stewards, follow green regulatory standards, and meet the growing demand for manufactured goods that are friendlier to the environment.

The EcoTek line debuts with a comprehensive listing of unsaturated polyesters and vinyl esters detailed on the new www.green-resins.com website. AOC chemists engineer EcoTek technologies to seamlessly offer processing and end-use properties that are better than or equivalent to conventional materials. Conversion to EcoTek green is backed by the industry's best technical support team and most knowledgeable sales force.

"AOC pioneered green resin technology in the 1980s when the company introduced unsaturated polyesters which chemically incorporate recycled polyethylene terephthalate, or PET," said Emilio Oramas, Business Manager - Open Mold Reinforced. "Over the years, we expanded development of Earth-friendly materials that support customer preferences and requirements for greener practices. Our work has grown to the point where we can launch our new class of EcoTek materials."

EcoTek™ product technologies follow three major paths toward greenness. Many products follow more than one path:

1. Renewable Content
AOC can offer several resin options that use building blocks derived from renewable resources instead of fossil fuels. The renewable content comes from agricultural products such as corn, plant oils and/or other sustainable resources that are precursors to the building blocks of the polymeric backbone. Resins made with these building blocks provide green alternatives to resins produced from building blocks that are wholly derived from crude oil and natural gas.

2. Recycled Content
EcoTek recycled content comes from reclaimed polyethylene terephthalate (PET) that would otherwise be destined for a landfill and/or from reclaimed glycols that would require diversion into a chemical waste stream.

3. Styrene Free
AOC has patented a revolutionary, new resin technology that is entirely free of styrene. New resin formulations incorporate alternative reactive diluent monomers that have very low volatility for reduced exposure in the workplace and lower emissions in the environment.

EcoTek™ Product Listings
EcoTek™ technologies are available for the primary composite manufacturing processes and end-use market sectors. The initial product listings on www.green-resins.com and in new AOC literature are:

1. Cast Polymers
2. Cured-In-Place Pipe
3. Closed Mold
4. Corrosion
5. Open Mold Laminating
6. Styrene-Free

EcoTek literature can be downloaded from www.green-resins.com or www.aoc-resins.com or can be requested from an AOC representative.

Leadership by Example
AOC follows manufacturing and operational practices that demonstrate environmental stewardship and go beyond required legal compliance. AOC adheres to Six Sigma Lean principles that lead to improve efficiencies. Leaner manufacturing reduces fossil fuel consumption, lowers emissions and reduces waste. In addition, AOC new headquarters facility earned a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Certificate from the U.S. Green Building Council. The building achieves exceptionally high heating, ventilation and air conditioning efficiencies through the use of a groundwater recirculation system.

Learn More at Composites 2010
AOC will officially launch EcoTek Green Technologies during Composites 2010, the annual exhibition and trade show of the American Composites Manufacturing Association. This year’s event is set for February 9-11, 2010, at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas.

To get a first-hand introduction to EcoTek technologies, event visitors can stop by the AOC exhibit at Booth 502. AOC will also accompany the launch with three different presentations during Composites 2010:

  • Wednesday, February 10, 3:30 p.m.
    Introduction of EcoTek™ Green Resins
By Emilio Oramas, Business Manager - Open Mold Reinforced

  • Wednesday, February 10, 4:00 p.m.
    Green Resins for Cast Polymers
    By Dr. John McAlvin

  • Thursday, February 11, 1:00 p.m.
Advancements for Unsaturated Polyester Based Composites:
Renewable, Recycled and Environmentally Friendly Resins
Technical Paper by Drs. John McAlvin and Thomas Steinhausler
