Während die zuckerrohrbasierte Ethanolwirtschaft in Brasilien mit Schwierigkeiten zu kämpfen hat, haben die Hersteller in den USA und in Europa wieder Tritt gefasst.
In den Vereinigten Staaten erreichte die Bioalkoholerzeugung im November die Rekordmenge von 761.000 Fass pro Tag. Das waren 14% mehr als im Vorjahresmonat. Schätzungen zufolge sind in den USA im vergangenen Jahr knapp 40 Mrd. l Ethanol (im Orginal irrtümlicherweise mit "Tonnen" angegeben) erzeugt worden - 108,5 Mio. t Getreide bzw. Mais dürfen dazu eingesetzt worden sein gegenüber 95,3 Mio. t im Jahr davor.
Weltweit dürften 2009/10 knapp 125 Mio. t Getreide zur Gewinnung von Ethanol eingesetzt werden, 15% mehr als im Jahr davor. Die Menge entspricht 7% der gesamten weltweiten Getreideernte.
